(Les Unc's) Art Bumgardner
Dr. T. A. Bumgardner teaches
voice, diction, vocal conducting, music theory and ear training at the University of
Wisconsin-Superior. He also offers music appreciation both as an on-campus course and
through the Extended Degree Program. He is a baritone who has performed widely throughout
the upper Midwest in opera, oratorio, and recital. He received his BA degree from the
University of North Texas where he studied voice with Frank McKinley and Edward Baird. His MFA degree was completed
at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis where he was a voice student of Roy Schuessler.
He earned his DMA degree from the University of Texas-Austin where he studied voice with
Josephine Luchesse Donato and Orville White. He has done additional graduate work at the Meadowbrook School of Music where he studied voice with Blake Stern,
vocal pedagogy with William Vennard, and participated in master classes with John Wustman.
Dr. Bumgardner has been a featured soloist in numerous oratorio and cantata performances
in the upper Midwest and in Texas. He has performed solo roles in opera productions of the
Duluth-Superior Symphony Association, the Northland Opera Theater, the . Opera Theater,
and the UW-Superior Opera Theater. He has also appeared frequently on the University
Recital Series.
Dr. Bumgardner is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He
served two terms as Regional Governor and member of the Board of Directors from the North
Central Region. In addition to his busy schedule of teaching, administrating and
performing, he is also involved in research. He has authored a book on the life and music
of American composer Norman Dello Joio (Twayne Publishers, 1986), and his article on the
history of the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra appears in Orchestras of the United
States: Selected Profiles (Greenwood Press, 1987).
Honors and awards received by Dr.
Bumgardner include the Chancellor's Award for Research and Scholarly Activity at
UW-Superior, and the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence
inTeaching.
